چکیده

recently, the s receiver function method has been successfully developed to identify upper mantle interfaces. s receiver functions have the advantage of being free of s-wave multiple reflections and can be more suitable than p receiver function for studying mantle lithosphere. however, because of specific ray geometry of the s-to-p converted waves, the s receiver function method has some technical difficulties and limitations. we selected data from teleseismic events (mb>5.7, epicentral distance between 60?- 85?) recorded since 1996 to present at 8 three component short period stations from the tabriz telemetry network. clear negative signals from the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (lab) are observed. the average lab depth is approximately 85 km and varies from 77 to 103 km underneath the nw of iran.

Variation of Lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary beneath Iran by using S Receiver function

The current geological and tectonic setting of Iran is due to the ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates, which resulted in the formation of the Iranian plateau, mountain building, extensive deformation and seismicity. The Iranian plateau is characterized by various domains including the continental collision and the oceanic plate seduction. Based on S receiver functions ar...

A global view of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary.

The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary divides the rigid lid from the weaker mantle and is fundamental in plate tectonics. However, its depth and defining mechanism are not well known. We analyzed 15 years of global seismic data using P-to-S (Ps) converted phases and imaged an interface that correlates with tectonic environment, varying from 95 +/- 4 kilometers beneath Precambrian shields and p...

Stratified seismic anisotropy and the lithosphere- asthenosphere boundary beneath eastern North America

Long records of teleseismic observations accumulated at permanent seismic stations Harvard, MA; Palisades, NY; and Standing Stone, PA, in eastern North America are inverted for vertical distribution of anisotropic parameters. High-resolution anisotropy-aware P wave receiver function analysis and multiple-layer core-refracted SKS waveform modeling favor more than one layer of anisotropy beneath ...

Melt-rich lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary inferred from petit-spot volcanoes

Young basaltic knolls have been discovered on the old oceanic lithosphere, namely petit-spot volcanoes. Based on their geochemical signatures, they have presumably originated from partial melts in the asthenosphere. However, there is no direct information on the depth provenance of petit-spot formation. Here we report new geothermobarometric data of rare mantle xenoliths discovered from petit-s...
